The Habitat & Biodiversity scenario
The Nawegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve has rich floristic diversity. The major forest type is "Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest" 5A/C3 as per the Champion and Seth lassification.
Till now 274 and 364 plant species have been identified from Location of NNTR in Central Indian Landscape Nawegaon National Park and Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary respectively. Study for other PAs is not done so far. In most parts of Tiger Reserve multi-storey vegetations are found. An important feature being noticed is high predominance of one species.
Being dry deciduous the trees shed leaves in hot season. Few thorny plants are also found. Generally, good quality forests are found in pockets on deep moist soils in valleys and along nallas. The crop in general is young to middle aged with few matured trees in the over wood. The major tree species are Terminalia tomentosa,Lagerstroemia parviflora, nogeisus lotifolia, Pterocarpus marsupium, Diospyrus melanoxylon, Tectona grandis, Lannea coromandeliana, Haldina cordifolia & Xylia xylocarpa., Along the nallas Terminalia arjuna, Syzyguim cumini, Schleichera oleosa,etc are found.Many shrubs and herbs like Holarrhoena arborea, Wrightia tinctoria,Woodfordia fructicosa, Helicteres isora etc. form the ground storey. Climbers which are of common occurrence include Combretum decandrum, Zizyphus oenoplia, Calycopteris floribunda, Butea superba, Bauhinia vahlii, and Acacia pinnata.
Grasses found are Themeda quadrivalvis, Iseilema laxum, Apluda mutica,Eragrostis tennella, Cynodon dactylon, Imperata cylindrica, Vetiveria zizaniodes,Heteropogan contrortus, etc
Bamboo occurs in abundance over the central portion in all five PAs of the Tiger Reserve where deep soil combined with moisture is available. It grows as middle storey in teak as well as mixed forest.The large carnivores like Tiger & leopard and smaller carnivores like wild dog,wolf jackal, jungle cat and also the good population of sloth bear is reported from
NNTR. The important herbivore includes Cheetal, Sambar, Nilgai, Chousingha,Barking deer, Wild pig and Indian gaur. Mouse deer has also been recorded from the area.
The other animals include common langoor, Rhesus macaque, Pangolin,Honey badger, Flying squirrels, Civets and Mongoose species, Giant squirrel etc. More than 300 species of birds have been reported from the area along with good number

About the Area, Legal status and Connectivity:
Nawegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR) was notified as 46th tiger reserve of India on 12th December, 2013. Its 5th Tiger reserve of Maharashtra. It is situated in Gondia and Bhandara Districts in the North–Eastern corner of Maharashtra. Gondia district shares common boundaries with the states of Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh on North and Eastern side respectively.
Strategically the Tiger Reserve is located in the heart of central Indian Tiger landscape which contributes almost 1/6 of the total tiger population of the country.This area is an excellent abode to almost all major floral and faunal species found in central India.NNTR comprised of the notified area of Nawegaon National Park, Nawegaon Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, New Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary and Koka Wildlife Sanctuary. Except 17.6 ha. land in Nagzira sanctuary, (Nagzira tourism complex) and 251.46 ha of PF in Koka sanctuary, rest has been notified as the Critical Tiger habitat as per Sec. 38 (v) of the WLP (Amendment) Act 2006.
